Barcelona strongly criticized the Spanish FA after Kylian Mbappé received just a one-match ban for a violent foul, calling the decision unfair and shameful.
Kylian Mbappé has been handed a one-match suspension following his red card in Real Madrid’s recent clash against Alavés, but the decision has drawn fierce backlash from Barcelona, who say the punishment is far too lenient.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday that Mbappé will only miss one La Liga match — the upcoming fixture against Athletic Club — despite being sent off for a reckless and dangerous challenge on Antonio Blanco.
Although the red card was considered justified, Mbappé’s clean disciplinary record and post-match apology helped reduce the expected sanction. Spanish media had speculated the Real Madrid forward could be suspended for two matches, but the final decision proved more forgiving.
The reaction from Barcelona was immediate and scathing.
"To begin with – this is absurd," said Barcelona vice president Rafael Yuste. "Mbappé’s foul was extremely violent and could have caused a serious injury or even a broken bone. This punishment is completely disproportionate. I can’t imagine what would have happened if one of our players had committed the same foul."
Yuste didn’t hold back, continuing: "If a player loses control like that... It’s unfair. It shows once again that we have to be perfect and that everything depends solely on us. This was a terrible example for football. It’s a disgrace."
