Ed Sheeran says he was drunk when he unintentionally interrupted Ruben Amorim's live interview after Ipswich’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Ed Sheeran has revealed that he had "about 10 pints" before his awkward stand-off with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim after Ipswich Town's 1-1 draw with United earlier this month.
The global pop icon, who owns 1.4% of Ipswich and is the front-of-shirt sponsor, made headlines after unintentionally interrupting Amorim’s post-match interview live on Sky Sports. Amorim had just taken charge of his first game as United manager, and Sheeran’s mistimed appearance caused a stir.
Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, Sheeran said the incident was the result of overindulgence in his executive suite at Portman Road. "I had it gutted and turned into a pub… I'd had about 10 pints," he admitted. "Jamie [Redknapp] said come and see me afterwards, so I went over not realising Amorim was being interviewed. It was very clearly the wrong time – but I’ve learned my lesson."
The singer-songwriter also made a light-hearted appeal to opposition fans, asking for better chants when mocking him. "The chants haven’t been funny enough," Sheeran joked. "We were at Wolves and they were chanting ‘Ed Sheeran’s a c***’, and I thought, at least have a bit of imagination. Spurs sing 'Gimme, gimme, gimme a ginger from Sweden' – I want that kind of creativity."
Sheeran has been a lifelong Ipswich supporter and regularly attends games. He will be watching closely as Kieran McKenna’s side attempt to escape the Premier League relegation zone. Ipswich face Bournemouth on April 2, with just nine matches remaining to secure survival.
