Estudiantes is closing in on MLS star Luciano Acosta, investing $5 million to bring him back to Argentina, following a series of high-profile signings.

Estudiantes de La Plata is on the verge of securing Luciano Acosta as their next major signing, following a series of high-profile investments backed by businessman Foster Gillett. After reaching a verbal agreement last week, the club is preparing to finalize the deal, with $5 million set to be invested in bringing the MLS star back to Argentine football.

Gillett's influence on Estudiantes' transfer moves

Gillett's involvement in the Argentine transfer market has been making headlines, particularly after Cristian Medina's move from Boca Juniors. The group paid Medina's $15 million release clause, securing his transfer to Estudiantes where he signed a contract until December 2030. Following that, the club pursued the release clause of Valentín Gómez and entered negotiations for Rodrigo Villagra.

While initial reports suggested that Gillett’s investment group would directly finance Acosta’s move, it has now been revealed that Estudiantes' board has secured a $10 million loan to navigate the transfer market. This loan will cover not only Acosta’s transfer but also the acquisition of a central defender.

Acosta’s impressive MLS career

Luciano Acosta, who previously had a stint with Estudiantes, has been a standout player for FC Cincinnati. Since joining the MLS club, he has been instrumental in their success, helping them win the Supporters’ Shield and earning MVP honors, despite the presence of global stars like Lionel Messi in the league.

In 151 appearances for Cincinnati, Acosta has scored 54 goals and provided 53 assists, solidifying his reputation as one of the league's top talents. His decision to return to Argentina comes despite interest from other clubs, including Vélez, and even though Hernán López Muñoz expressed a desire to join Estudiantes, the club has prioritized Acosta.

This move signifies Estudiantes’ ambition to strengthen their squad significantly, as they aim to compete at the highest level in Argentine football.
