ata Martino departs Inter Miami, with Javier Mascherano expected to take over as the club looks to extend Lionel Messi’s contract through 2026.

Inter Miami confirmed the departure of head coach Tata Martino, who cited personal reasons for stepping down after leading the team to the 2024 Supporters' Shield. Martino’s exit sets the stage for his potential successor, Javier Mascherano, Lionel Messi’s former teammate with Argentina and Barcelona.

Tata Martino Steps Away

Martino, 62, expressed gratitude for his time at Inter Miami, saying: “It has been an honor to work at such a special club... For strictly personal reasons, I have to leave Inter. I need to be in Rosario.”

Martino’s tenure included highs like the Supporters' Shield victory but ended with a disappointing first-round playoff exit against Atlanta United. Inter Miami’s leadership, including managing owner Jorge Mas, is now focused on finding the right successor.

Mascherano in the Spotlight

Reports suggest that Javier Mascherano, 40, is in contract talks to become Inter Miami’s next coach. The former Argentina U23 manager, who led the team at the Paris Olympics, has a strong connection with Messi, which Mas emphasized as crucial for the hire. "Without a doubt, familiarity with Leo and the other stars is an advantage," Mas said.

Messi’s Future with Miami

Messi’s contract, set to expire at the end of 2025, includes an option for extension. Mas expressed confidence in keeping the Argentine star through the opening of Miami Freedom Park in 2026. "I fully expect Leo Messi to be our No. 10 when we open our stadium in 2026," Mas said.

Big Ambitions for 2025

Inter Miami is poised for a busy 2025, with opportunities to compete in multiple tournaments, including the CONCACAF Champions Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and potentially the Copa Libertadores. Mas revealed his personal desire to see Messi compete in the Copa Libertadores, the only major competition he hasn’t played in.

Squad Overhaul on the Horizon

Inter Miami is also preparing for roster changes. Paraguayan winger Diego Gomez is expected to join Brighton in January, while negotiations with veteran striker Luis Suarez, whose contract is expiring, remain ongoing. "There are no budget limitations," Mas said. "We will bring the best players we can from anywhere in the world."
