Bayer Leverkusen are in advanced talks with Cesc Fabregas to replace Xabi Alonso, targeting the Como coach as their next managerial prodigy after Alonso's move to Real Madrid.
Bayer Leverkusen appear set to continue their successful formula of betting on young Spanish coaches, with Cesc Fabregas now emerging as the clear frontrunner to replace Xabi Alonso.
According to multiple reports from Germany and Italy, Leverkusen’s executive director Fernando Carro is eager to repeat the success of Alonso’s appointment by handing the reins to another untested but highly intelligent former midfielder—this time, from the bench of Serie A’s Como.
Fabregas, who played alongside Alonso for Spain’s national team, has reportedly informed Como of his desire to accept Leverkusen’s offer. Italian outlet Calciomercato claims that talks are already at an advanced stage and that an official announcement could follow soon.
The 37-year-old Spaniard is enjoying a breakthrough spell in his coaching career, having led Como to six consecutive Serie A wins and drawing widespread praise for his tactical vision and leadership.
Leverkusen are said to have offered Fabregas a three-year contract, confident that he can continue the progressive style of football Alonso implemented during his time at the club.
With Alonso set to join Real Madrid in the summer, Leverkusen’s choice signals continuity and boldness—traits that propelled the club to the top of German football under his tenure. Should Fabregas be confirmed, it would mark another major leap in a meteoric post-playing career.
