Marcus Rashford's loan spell at Aston Villa has hit uncertainty after injury, complicating a potential £40m permanent move and affecting Manchester United's summer plans.

After joining Villa on loan in January, Rashford impressed, contributing four goals and six assists in 17 appearances. Villa fans quickly embraced him, and the club secured a £40 million option to sign him permanently. However, a hamstring injury suffered in training has complicated matters, casting doubt over a permanent move.

Villa manager Unai Emery confirmed Rashford's injury ahead of their FA Cup semi-final, saying: "He’s injured. He got injured this week and yesterday we did a test - it is his hamstring. He won't be available for some weeks."

Rashford is not expected to require surgery, but a scan later this week will determine if he can return before the end of the season. Missing the final matches removes a crucial chance for Rashford to cement his place and convince Villa to trigger the buy option.

Emery’s recent decision to pick Rashford ahead of Ollie Watkins — despite Watkins admitting he was "fuming" about being dropped — indicated the Spaniard’s faith in the England international. Rashford’s calm penalty goal against Manchester City further strengthened his case before the injury.

Although Villa seemed poised to make Rashford’s stay permanent, the injury increases the possibility of his return to Old Trafford this summer. Rashford remains optimistic, believing he has proven his quality, particularly after a difficult relationship with United manager Ruben Amorim.

Rashford reportedly had ambitions to join Barcelona before moving to Villa, and a switch to Camp Nou could still materialize. Barcelona, fresh off a Copa del Rey triumph and La Liga success, will offer Champions League football next season — a major attraction.

For United, selling Rashford, along with Antony and Jadon Sancho, is crucial to boost Amorim's summer budget. Ideally, Villa would activate the £40m clause to streamline their transfer plans, but with uncertainty now surrounding Rashford’s fitness, United might need to explore other buyers quickly.
