Rodrygo Silva de Goes has opened up about his close relationship with Luka Modrić, describing their bond at Real Madrid as a father-son connection.
The 24-year-old Brazilian, who has been at the club since 2019, expressed his admiration for Modrić both as a player and a mentor.
"We’ve always had a very good relationship," Rodrygo said in an interview published on Real Madrid’s official website. "It’s interesting that he’s the same age as my father, so he calls me 'son' and I call him 'dad'."
Modrić’s influence on Rodrygo’s game
Modrić, now 39 years old, is Madrid’s most decorated player, having won 28 trophies since arriving in 2012. The Croatian captain continues to play a vital role for the club, both on and off the pitch.
"I'm a big fan of his, both as a player and as a person. He always helps me, every day," Rodrygo added.
The Brazilian recalled a memorable moment with Modrić in a Champions League match against Chelsea:
"He told me that when he receives the ball, I should attack the space, and that he will somehow pass it to me."
Rodrygo’s dream of playing with Modrić
Rodrygo emphasized how much he cherishes sharing the pitch with Modrić:
"Modrić has always been one of my favorite players, and I always wanted to play alongside him."
With Modrić’s contract expiring in three and a half months, Real Madrid is yet to decide whether to offer him an extension.
Preparing for Atletico clash
Real Madrid is now focused on their Champions League round of 16 second leg against Atletico Madrid. With a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, Rodrygo expects another intense battle:
"The matches with Atletico are played in a special atmosphere because they are derbies between the two biggest teams in the city."
Rodrygo had already made an impact in the first leg, scoring in the fourth minute to give Real Madrid an early lead.

The Brazilian also spoke about his growing connection with future teammate Kylian Mbappé and long-time attacking partner Vinicius Junior.
"Being part of an attack with such great players is like a dream. Every day we connect better and play better, but this is just the beginning because the three of us still have a beautiful story to tell."
