Iran have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, but a potential U.S. entry ban under Donald Trump's policies could complicate their participation.

Iran have officially secured their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but their qualification may trigger a serious political dilemma if Donald Trump returns to the White House.

With a 2–2 draw against Uzbekistan, powered by a brace from star striker Mehdi Taremi, Iran became the sixth team to book their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, joining hosts USA, Canada, and Mexico, as well as Japan and New Zealand.

However, Iran’s qualification has raised significant political concerns, particularly in light of recent statements and policy outlines from Trump’s camp.

According to The Guardian, a new draft policy suggests that, under a possible Trump administration, Iran could face a total travel ban to the United States.

That ban would include athletes and sports delegations, meaning Iranian players, coaches, and staff could be barred from entering the U.S., where roughly 70% of World Cup matches are scheduled to take place.

The U.S. has reportedly listed Iran among ten countries whose citizens would face a full entry ban as part of broader immigration restrictions, raising serious questions about Iran's ability to participate if drawn to play on American soil.

This isn't the first time sports and politics have collided on the global stage, but the implications could be unprecedented if a FIFA-qualified team is unable to enter a host country.

Iran will now appear at their fourth consecutive World Cup, but as the tournament approaches, the focus may shift from the pitch to diplomatic negotiations — especially if Trump regains power in the upcoming U.S. elections.
