Estudiantes step up their transfer ambitions, negotiating with Lucas Alario after securing Cristian Medina. The ex-River striker could return to Argentine football in 2025.
After securing Cristian Medina for a club-record $15 million, Estudiantes, led by president Juan Sebastián Verón, are aiming to make further waves in the transfer market. The La Plata club has initiated talks to bring Lucas Alario, currently at Inter de Porto Alegre, back to Argentine football.
Discussions between Estudiantes, Inter, and the 31-year-old forward are reportedly underway, with Alario showing interest in returning to his home country. Having struggled for game time in Brazil—just over 1500 minutes across 36 games this season, with five goals—the former River Plate and Colón star is seeking a fresh start. With one year left on his contract, a move to Estudiantes could provide the opportunity he’s looking for.
Alario's return would bolster Estudiantes' attack, potentially pairing him with Guido Carrillo. Meanwhile, rumors about the club’s interest in Rafael Santos Borré have yet to materialize into a concrete offer, making Alario Verón’s primary target.
Alario has left a mark on Argentine football with stints at Colón and River Plate. In 60 appearances for Colón, he scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists, while his time at River saw him shine with 41 goals and 12 assists in 82 matches, including triumphs in the Copa Libertadores, Recopa Sudamericana, and Copa Argentina. Overall, he has played 142 games in the domestic league, scoring 53 goals and assisting on 20 occasions.
While Estudiantes fans celebrate the addition of Cristian Medina, Verón hinted at more to come, sharing on social media:
