Arsenal fans can expect a major signing in the striker position this summer, as the club looks to make a big-money move for a new number nine.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal had been monitoring Matheus Cunha but ultimately decided against making a move for a very simple reason—they are saving funds for a blockbuster signing at the end of the season.
Arsenal’s quiet January transfer window
Cunha was one of the most sought-after players in the January transfer window, with Arsenal and several other clubs showing strong interest. However, the Brazilian remained at Wolverhampton and even signed a new contract.
Despite Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka struggling with injuries, Mikel Arteta chose not to sign a short-term replacement, a decision that left many fans frustrated. However, according to Romano, this was all part of a bigger plan.
"They wanted to save a lot of money because next summer they want to bring in a beast of an attacker, a real nine," said Romano.
Arsenal’s striker targets for the summer
Aside from Cunha, Arsenal reportedly held talks with four other strikers in January, including Evan Ferguson, Benjamin Šeško, Igor Jesus, and Ollie Watkins. However, none of those moves materialized as the club remained focused on their long-term objectives.
According to reports in England, the top target for Arsenal this summer is Alexander Isak, the Newcastle United striker who has been in outstanding form this season.
In addition to Isak, other names being linked to Arsenal include Viktor Gyökeres, Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Šeško, and Dušan Vlahović, all of whom are expected to be on the move next summer.
