Lionel Messi's current contract with Inter Miami runs until the end of 2025, but talks are underway to extend his stay through the 2026 World Cup.
Lionel Messi has taken the MLS by storm since his arrival at Inter Miami in 2023. The 37-year-old Argentine star has delivered an incredible 42 goals and 21 assists in just 48 appearances across all competitions, becoming the face of football in the United States.
With his current deal set to expire at the end of 2025, Inter Miami are working behind the scenes to tie him down for a longer period. Club officials, including co-owner David Beckham, are reportedly in advanced talks to secure a new two-year contract that would keep Messi at the club through the 2026 season.
The timing is strategic. Inter Miami's new stadium is set to open in 2026, and the United States will co-host the FIFA World Cup that same year. Retaining Messi would not only boost the club’s profile but also strengthen MLS’s global appeal during a landmark period for North American football.
Messi is said to be happy in Florida and has shown no interest in negotiating with other clubs. The strong Argentine presence at the club, including teammates like Jordi Alba, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, has further helped him settle.
Inter Miami have also made a strong start to the new MLS season, staying unbeaten in their first six games with four wins and two draws and a goal difference of +6 (12 scored, 6 conceded).
With momentum building both on and off the pitch, Messi's stay in Miami looks likely to continue into the next World Cup cycle.
