Borussia Dortmund has announced the heartbreaking news of the passing of club legend Wolfgang "Teddy" de Beer.

The former goalkeeper, who devoted over three decades to the club in various roles, passed away suddenly on December 30, 2024, at the age of 60.

Teddy de Beer was a beloved figure in Dortmund, both during and after his playing career. He spent 15 years as the team’s goalkeeper, amassing nearly 300 appearances before retiring in 2001. Following his retirement, he transitioned into a coaching role, serving as Dortmund’s goalkeeping coach until 2018. In recent years, he worked in the club’s offices, continuing his lifelong commitment to the BVB family.

During his playing days, de Beer contributed to one of the most successful eras in Borussia Dortmund's history. He was instrumental in the club’s victories in the Champions League, two Bundesliga titles, the DFB Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and three German Super Cups. In total, he was part of the club’s triumph in nine of their 14 major trophies.

In a heartfelt statement, Dortmund expressed their grief: "Borussia Dortmund mourns one of its leaders of the last decades: Wolfgang 'Teddy' de Beer passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on December 30, 2024, at the age of 60. His death has left us speechless. The BVB family is thinking of Teddy's wife Jutta, his children Jana and Leo, and everyone who was close to him."

Born in the small town of Dinslaken, roughly 50 km from Dortmund, de Beer embodied humility and dedication. Reflecting on his life, he once described himself as a "conservative nerd with a positive outlook on life" who valued calmness and personal connections."

As a goalkeeping coach, Teddy worked under iconic managers such as Mathias Sammer, Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel, and Peter Bosz, further cementing his legacy at the club. His influence on and off the pitch will remain a cherished part of Borussia Dortmund’s history.

De Beer’s passing marks the end of an era for Borussia Dortmund, but his memory and contributions will forever hold a special place in the hearts of the BVB community.
