MLS has banned Messi’s security guard, Yassine Cheuko, from patrolling the sidelines during matches, despite repeated fan invasions and viral moments defending the Inter Miami star.

Lionel Messi’s well-known personal security guard, Yassine Cheuko, has been officially banned by MLS from operating on the sidelines during matches, despite growing concerns over pitch invaders targeting the Inter Miami star.

The decision comes as the league insists it will take over full responsibility for player security, sidelining the man known across social media for his lightning-quick reactions and former Marine training. Cheuko, who was hired on the recommendation of David Beckham, became a viral sensation for sprinting across pitches to intercept fans trying to reach Messi for selfies or autographs.

“They don’t let me be on the sidelines,” said Cheuko, expressing frustration in a recent interview. “I worked in Europe for seven years in Ligue 1 and the Champions League. In that time, only six pitch invasions happened. In the United States, I’ve seen 16 in just 20 months. This is a big problem here. I’m not the problem—let me help Messi.”

MLS appears concerned about maintaining strict protocol, opting for standardized league-wide security procedures rather than allowing personal bodyguards to intervene on the pitch. While understanding of the league’s decision, Cheuko insists that his experience could help improve current safety measures.

“I love the MLS. I just want to help. I’m not better than anyone, but I have a lot of experience from Europe. We need cooperation,” he added.

With Messi continuing to draw unprecedented fan attention at every MLS venue, questions remain as to whether league security will be able to respond as swiftly and effectively as Cheuko has in recent months.
